Meet Our Staff

  Joey Scherschel, Owner/Director

My name is Joey Scherschel but most children usually call me Jo-Jo.  I started in child care in January of 96 working as the Department Head of Dunn Memorial Hospitals three child care facilities.  In March of 2001, Dunn closed their facilities and I leased a building from Dunn for the next 5 years providing child care.  In August 2005 construction started at our current location and we opened the doors in December 2005.

I have attended hundreds of hours of trainings on child development and early childhood topics over the years.  I received my Child Development Associative Credential in 1999 from Ivy Tech State College and hold my Bachelors from
Indiana University.

I was born and raised here in
Lawrence County and I have one sister Stormi Scherschel Jones and I have one nephew Jett and a niece Mallorie.  My one only child, Kade, was born in 2008 and he is a papaw's boy.

I enjoy spending time with family and friends, boating, and scrap booking.  I absolutely love my job.  Children are my passion.

  Jamie Chastain, Assistant Director

My name is Jamie Chastain. I have been married to my husband, Chuck, since 1991. We have 3 boys; Tanner, Tucker, and Trey. I was born and raised in Bedford, IN. I graduated in 1987 from BNLHS. Before starting in the Early Childhood field, I worked at a local restaurant for 15 years. When my youngest started first grade, I decided I would like to pursue a career in Early Childhood. I worked as a Director’s Assistant for another child development center for 2 years before starting at Where Futures Begin in August of 2006. I received my Child Development Associate Credential in May 2009 and I attend at least 20 hours of trainings or conferences every year. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, fishing, and racing. I have chosen this career path because I want to make a difference in the lives of children. I want to help, love, encourage, and teach children.
Joann Thompson, Lead Teacher Room B/Preschool Teacher

Hi y’all- I’m Miss Joann. My husband, Steve and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary in June 2009. We have 3 children; Jennifer, Stefanie, and Jason. We also have 4 grandchildren; Chad, Kayla, Stanlee, and Gabriel. But we are not empty nester's’ with 28 paws running around our house.

I started working with Joey at Dunn Hospital in September 1998. I have my Child Development Assoc. Credential and have attended numerous conferences and trainings with Joey over the years. I have watched a lot of our children go from diapers to Junior High. In my first preschool class with Dunn, I had a young lady that now works here with us.

I enjoy working with all of your children; building blocks, playing pirates, being grandma to their baby dolls, and enjoying the wonderful creations they come up with while in the kitchen. When I’m asked why I work here—my answer is, “I do it for the hugs”!

  Tristen Bauer, After-school Assistant

My name is Tristen, I have been working for WFB ever since I was 14 years old. Joey has known me since I was about 6 weeks old. She is like a second mom to me. I work for Joey a couple of times per week. I think volunteering/working here has taught me a lot of responsibility. When I get older I want to study to be a veterinarian. I know how hard it will be to get there, but I know I can do it if I set my mind to it. Some of my hobbies now are; going to the movies with my Dad, camping, hanging out with my friends, and spending time with my family. But I really focus on maintaining my grades.

  Bernie Scherschel, Financial Manager

After almost 39 years, I retired from General Motors.  I have years of experience as Manufacturing Manager, Quality Manager, and Engineering Manager.  I was excited about relaxing, golfing, and spending time with my grandchildren. When my oldest daughter, Joey, opened the new facility I started helping her out with the business paper work so that she could spend more time in the classroom. You can find me in the office on most days after my golf tee time. I also pickup and take the kindergarten children to and from school, am responsible for minor maintenance work, and for lawn.  Most of the kids call me “Papaw Bernie” because of hearing my own grandchildren calling me that. I graduated from Purdue University with an Engineering Degree many years ago. My other daughters name is Stormi and I have two grandchildren, Jett & Kade.

  Shelby Sigwart, Room A Assistant

Hello, my name is Shelby Sigwart Chastain.  I started working here after I graduated from BNL the summer of 2010.  I was born in California and moved here when I was 3 years old.  I have two brothers, one of which lives in California.  I enjoy playing volleyball, basketball, softball, and going to the races with my friends and family.  Since coming to work here I have enjoyed working and playing with all the children and learning just as much as they do!
